    Background:

    • Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that can cause various health issues in cats.
    • Hematological abnormalities, including cytopenias, are common sequelae of FeLV infection.

    Observation:

    • Three cats infected with FeLV presented with cytopenia.
    • One cat showed increased marrow blast cells, diagnosed as aleukemic leukemia.
    • The other two cats exhibited neutropenia and altered granulopoiesis in bone marrow.

    • Aleukemic leukemia in one cat progressed over 3.5 months to acute myelomonocytic leukemia (blast crisis).
    • Neutropenia and abnormal bone marrow granulopoiesis preceded myeloid leukemia development in the other two cats.
    • These findings highlight distinct pathways of FeLV-induced leukemogenesis.

    Implications:

    • Early detection of cytopenia and bone marrow changes may aid in identifying cats at risk for FeLV-associated leukemia.
    • This study underscores the importance of hematological monitoring in FeLV-positive cats.
    • Further research into the mechanisms of FeLV leukemogenesis could lead to novel therapeutic strategies.
