Summary

Neuralgic amyotrophy, also known as Parsonage-Turner syndrome, is an acute brachial plexus neuropathy. While recovery is common within years, some patients may experience lasting neurological deficits, particularly with recurrent attacks.

Background:

  • Neuralgic amyotrophy (Parsonage-Turner syndrome) is a rare idiopathic condition.
  • It presents as acute neuropathy affecting the brachial plexus, commonly in the shoulder.

Observation:

  • Diagnosis relies on clinical presentation and physical examination.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the shoulder and cervical spine aids in differential diagnosis.

Findings:

  • No specific treatment exists for neuralgic amyotrophy.
  • Complete recovery occurs in 50-67% of cases within 2-3 years.
  • Severity of initial symptoms influences recovery extent.

Implications:

  • Persistent neurological deficits can occur if full strength and function are not restored.
