Summary

Genetic variability in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), a lentivirus related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), was analyzed. Findings suggest previously identified STLV-IIIAGM and HTLV-IV are likely derived from SIVMAC-251.

Background:

  • Limited information exists on genetic variability among non-human primate lentiviruses.
  • Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) is a lentivirus closely related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the genetic variability of SIV isolates from macaques.
  • To clarify the identity of isolates previously designated STLV-IIIAGM and HTLV-IV.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of two molecular clones of SIV.
  • Derivation of restriction endonuclease maps for six SIV isolates (five from rhesus macaques, one from a cynomolgus macaque).
  • Nucleotide sequencing of the envelope region of cloned SIVMAC-251.
