Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization in women is not linked to overall vaginal microbiota diversity. However, specific bacteria within certain community state types are associated with GBS carriage.

  • Streptococcus agalactiae, or group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a significant neonatal pathogen and an increasing cause of adult infections.

  • Amplicon-based sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA V3-V4 region was performed to analyze the vaginal microbiota composition.
  • Main Results:

    • No association was found between GBS carriage and demographic factors, alpha-diversity, or overall vaginal microbiota community state types (CST).
    • GBS positivity was significantly higher in CST IV-A compared to CST IV-B within the non-Lactobacillus-dominant CST IV.
    • Principal coordinates analysis revealed significant clustering by GBS status, with linear discriminant analysis identifying 18 taxa associated with GBS carriage. After adjustment, 4 taxa were positively and 6 negatively associated with GBS.

    Conclusions:

    • Vaginal microbiota community state type and alpha-diversity are not directly related to GBS status.
    • Specific microbial taxa are associated with GBS colonization, suggesting a potential role for the vaginal microbiota in modulating the carriage of this pathogen.
