Summary

Children with ADHD show working memory deficits, but this study found their episodic buffer component is intact. Hyperactivity in ADHD was linked to visuospatial and episodic buffer tasks, but not episodic buffer demands specifically.

Background:

  • Working memory (WM) deficits are common in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), contributing to behavioral and functional impairments.
  • WM is a complex system with multiple components, but specific WM subcomponent roles in ADHD remain unclear.
  • Research is needed to identify which WM subcomponents are impaired in ADHD and link them to symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of the episodic buffer, a key working memory component, in children with ADHD.
  • To determine if episodic buffer function is impaired in ADHD and if it relates to hyperactivity.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 86 children (ages 8-13), with and without ADHD, completed phonological, visuospatial, and episodic buffer working memory tests.
  • Gross motor activity was measured using actigraphy during tasks.
  • Bayesian mixed-model ANOVAs were used for analysis, controlling for age, gender, SES, and IQ.

Main Results:

  • Children with ADHD performed significantly worse on all three working memory tests compared to controls.
  • The ADHD group exhibited significantly more hyperactivity during visuospatial and episodic buffer tests.
  • However, ADHD and non-ADHD groups showed equivalent responses to episodic buffer demands regarding performance and hyperactivity.

Conclusions:

  • The episodic buffer component of working memory appears to be intact in children with ADHD.
  • Episodic buffer function is not directly related to ADHD-related hyperactivity symptoms.
