Summary

This study developed an experience-based value set for the EuroQoL Five-Dimensional Five-Level Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) in Germany. The new EQ-5D-5L values reflect how populations value their current health states.

Area of Science:

  • Health Economics
  • Psychometrics
  • Quality of Life Research

Background:

  • Health state valuation is crucial for healthcare decision-making.
  • Existing valuation methods may differ based on whether current or hypothetical health states are assessed.
  • The EuroQoL Five-Dimensional Five-Level Questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) is a widely used instrument for measuring health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To derive an experience-based value set for the EQ-5D-5L using data from the general German population.
  • To provide a novel tool for healthcare decision-makers to summarize health states based on current experiences.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized pooled population survey data from Germany (N = 8114) collected between 2012-2015.
  • Employed a visual analogue scale (VAS) for health state valuation.
  • Analyzed six generalized linear model specifications with cross-validation to determine the best predictive model for the EQ-5D-5L value set.

Main Results:

  • Consistent model parameters were obtained across analyses.
  • A model incorporating all problem levels and the highest problem level demonstrated superior predictive accuracy.
  • The derived experience-based value set showed higher predictive accuracy than a previous EQ-5D-3L value set.

Conclusions:

  • The estimation of an experience-based EQ-5D-5L value set is feasible and provides a valuable option for decision-makers.
  • Experienced health state values were generally lower for mild states and higher for severe states compared to a hypothetical-based Dutch value set.
  • Further research is needed to determine the clinical relevance and utility of this novel value set.
