Crossed fused kidney is a rare congenital urinary tract malformation where both kidneys fuse and are located on one side. This case highlights that intervention is not always necessary for this typically asymptomatic condition.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Congenital Malformations
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Crossed fused ectopic kidney is a rare congenital anomaly of the urinary tract.
  • Characterized by fusion of both kidneys on one side of the midline.
  • Typically identified incidentally, often during autopsy rather than clinical presentation.

Observation:

  • A unique case of crossed fused left to right ectopia with inferior fusion and nephroptosis was observed.
  • Unlike typical presentations, both fused kidneys were at the same anatomical level.
  • Initially misdiagnosed as cake kidney, detailed imaging confirmed the specific ectopia and fusion.

Findings:

  • The condition was detected during investigation for abdominal pain, with only a small calculus noted.
  • The patient remained clinically and radiologically stable throughout follow-up without active intervention.

  • This case demonstrates a variant presentation of crossed fused renal ectopia.
  • Implications:

    • Suggests that active intervention may not be mandatory for all cases of crossed fused ectopic kidney.
    • Highlights the importance of careful radiological assessment to differentiate from similar anomalies like cake kidney.
    • Emphasizes that patients can remain asymptomatic and stable without surgical or medical intervention.
