Purpose of the Study:

Identify how primary care multidisciplinary teams collaborate.
Determine professional involvement and collaborative activities.
Assess impact of collaboration on clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature review.
Searched MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases.

Main Results:

Four team compositions identified: specialized, highly multidisciplinary, doctor-nurse-pharmacist triad, and physician-nurse centered.
Four collaboration types identified: co-located, non-hierarchical, shared consultations, and referral/counter-referral.
Positive or neutral collaboration outcomes reported in studies comparing collaborative vs. non-collaborative approaches.

Conclusions:

Collaboration in primary care teams is generally positive or neutral.
A new objective typology for collaboration in primary care was developed.
