Summary

Some family deaths in car crashes may be unrecognized familial murder-suicides, not accidents. This underdiagnosed event type is difficult to track in crash databases.

Background:

Single-vehicle crashes into stationary objects are often classified as suicides.
The possibility of familial murder-suicides in such incidents remains largely unexplored.

Observation:

A case involving a mother and daughter in a fatal car crash prompted investigation.
Unusual maternal behavior before the crash suggested a nonaccidental event.

Findings:

Determining driver intent in fatal crashes is challenging retrospectively.
Murder-suicides are not consistently coded in motor vehicle crash databases, hindering incidence tracking.

Implications:

Familial murder-suicides may be an underdiagnosed category within vehicle crash fatalities.
Improved data collection and classification are needed to identify these events accurately.
This highlights a potential gap in understanding the full spectrum of intentional vehicle-related deaths.
