Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Isolated hepatic tuberculoma is a rare form of localized hepatic tuberculosis (TB) often misdiagnosed as a neoplastic lesion.
  • Radiological evaluations and non-specific liver function tests are insufficient for accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A case of isolated hepatic tuberculoma in a 38-year-old female from a tribal area presented with fever, abdominal pain, and a solitary liver nodule.
  • Advanced imaging modalities failed to provide a definitive diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination of a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of isolated hepatic tuberculoma.
  • The patient was successfully treated with anti-tubercular drugs.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering hepatic TB in the differential diagnosis of liver masses, especially in endemic areas.
  • Early diagnosis through biopsy and prompt treatment with anti-tubercular therapy leads to excellent patient outcomes.
