Background:

  • Malaria outbreaks pose a significant public health challenge in Zimbabwe, particularly in the Manicaland province.
  • Manicaland experiences the highest burden of malaria within the country, necessitating focused research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the factors contributing to a malaria outbreak in Chipinge district, Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe.
  • To assess community knowledge and risk factors associated with malaria transmission.

Main Methods:

  • A matched case-control study was conducted from week 30 to 40 in 2015.
  • Data was collected from 92 participants (46 cases, 46 controls) using guided interviews with structured questionnaires and checklists.

Main Results:

  • Living in houses with open eaves increased malaria odds by 2.4 (95% CI=1.0; 5.6).
  • Proximity to rivers or swamps within 3 km increased malaria odds by 2.7 (95% CI=1.2; 6.3).
  • Lack of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) in bedrooms increased malaria odds by 2.2 (95% CI=1.2; 6.4).

Conclusions:

  • Integrated malaria prevention and control strategies must be intensified.
  • Maintaining a robust surveillance system is essential to prevent future malaria outbreaks.
