Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

897
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

325
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Adler's Individual Psychology

2.5K
Alfred Adler, a prominent figure in psychology, founded the school of individual psychology. In contrast to Freud's emphasis on sexual or aggressive motives, Adler suggested that individuals are primarily motivated by their purposes and goals. He believed that people strive for perfection rather than pleasure. Adler argued that individuals could creatively act upon their genetic inheritance and environmental experiences to shape their own lives, emphasizing conscious motivation over...

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors

2.7K
Raymond Cattell's trait theory offers a structured framework for understanding personality by distinguishing between two critical traits: surface and source traits. Surface traits are observable patterns of behavior, such as indecisiveness, anxiety, and irrational fears. These traits are less stable, varying across situations and over time. This means that they are less helpful in understanding the deeper aspects of an individual's personality.
In contrast, source traits are the...

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

1.3K
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Personality Science
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Psychopathy is often viewed negatively, but research suggests adaptive traits associated with it exist.
  • These adaptive traits include stress immunity, social adeptness, leadership, and fearlessness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate the Durand Adaptive Psychopathic Traits Questionnaire (DAPTQ).
  • To assess adaptive traits correlated with psychopathic personality.

Main Methods:

  • The DAPTQ was administered to 765 community individuals.
  • A 9-factor solution was identified: Leadership, Logical Thinking, Composure, Creativity, Fearlessness, Money Smart, Focus, Extroversion, and Management.
  • Internal consistency, convergent validity, and divergent validity were assessed.

Main Results:

  • The DAPTQ demonstrated good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha .68–.88).
  • Validation supported the 9-factor structure of adaptive psychopathic traits.
  • Convergent and divergent validity were confirmed using established psychopathy measures.

Conclusions:

  • The DAPTQ shows potential as a valid instrument for measuring adaptive traits associated with psychopathy.
  • Further research is needed to validate the DAPTQ across diverse populations and personality constructs.
