Summary

The dynamic Scheimpflug analyzer demonstrates excellent repeatability for most corneal deformation parameters in healthy eyes. However, age, axial length, and central corneal thickness can significantly impact the reliability of certain measurements.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Optics
  • Corneal Biomechanics

Background:

  • Corneal deformation parameters are crucial for assessing ocular biomechanics.
  • Dynamic Scheimpflug analysis is a key technology for measuring these parameters.
  • Understanding measurement repeatability is essential for clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the test-retest reliability of corneal deformation parameters obtained via dynamic Scheimpflug analysis.
  • To investigate the influence of baseline clinical factors on the repeatability of these measurements.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective, cross-sectional study involving 48 healthy subjects.
  • Repeated measurements using a dynamic Scheimpflug analyzer.
  • Calculation of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and repeatability coefficients for 35 parameters.
  • Analysis of associations between variability and age, axial length (AL), intraocular pressure (IOP), and central corneal thickness (CCT).

Main Results:

  • Excellent repeatability (ICC ≥ 0.75) was observed for 62.9% of the 35 parameters.
  • Good repeatability was found for 20% of parameters.
  • Age, AL, and CCT significantly influenced the repeatability of several parameters, while IOP had minimal impact.

Conclusions:

  • Dynamic Scheimpflug analysis offers favorable measurement reliability for most corneal parameters in healthy individuals.
  • Six parameters exhibited poor-to-fair repeatability.
  • Clinicians should consider the impact of age, AL, and CCT on measurement variability when using this device.
