Background:

Accurate self-evaluation of technical skill is crucial for surgical resident development.
Discrepancies between self and faculty assessments can hinder educational progression.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the correlation between self-assessment and faculty assessment of surgical residents' technical skills.
To determine if this correlation varies across different postgraduate year (PGY) levels.

Main Methods:

14 general surgery residents (PGY 1-5) participated over 6 months.
Residents and faculty completed the Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) after laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated for junior, PGY3, and senior residents.

Overall, resident self-evaluations correlated well with faculty assessments across all PGY levels (ρ 0.9-0.97).
Junior residents showed poor correlation in specific areas like respect for tissue and operative flow.
