Background:

  • U.S. Armed Forces integration of women into combat roles necessitates high physical standards.
  • Physical demands of Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) require significant lifting and load carriage capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if a specialized physical conditioning program can reduce performance disparities between male and female soldiers in lifting and load carriage.
  • To determine if women can meet the physical requirements for Army MOSs through targeted training.

Main Methods:

  • Forty women underwent a 24-week physical training program including resistance training, running, and load carriage drills.
  • Occupational and physical performance metrics were measured pre- and post-training.
  • Repeated measures analysis of variance analyzed pre-, mid-, and post-test data.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements in women's maximal lifting strength (12-20 kg) and endurance (9-34 reps).
  • Enhanced jumping performance (0.23 m) and local muscular endurance (46 reps).
  • Reduced load carriage time (3.7-8.6 min) and achieved 82-94% of male scores in aerobic and muscular endurance.

Conclusions:

  • Six months of concurrent training significantly improved women's capacity for physically demanding MOS tasks.
  • Training increased the percentage of women qualifying for heavy/very heavy MOSs from 24% to 78%.
  • A 6+ month resistance training program can adequately prepare women for demanding military roles.
