Summary

Background:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity weekly for optimal health.
  • Current physical activity levels among Indian populations engaging in leisure-time exercise are not well-documented.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess whether Indian adults meet WHO physical activity recommendations.
  • To investigate demographic factors influencing leisure-time physical activity intensity.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire-based study collected data on demographics, leisure-time physical activity engagement, and exercise dosage.
  • Participants aged 18-64 years were included, with data analyzed from 390 individuals (231 males, 159 females).

Main Results:

  • Over 50% of participants exercised voluntarily, and 34% for health benefits, with 94% exercising without prescription.
  • Significantly fewer participants over 38 years (12.82%) met moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise recommendations compared to those under 38 (55.38%).

Conclusions:

  • Leisure-time physical activity choices in this Indian cohort are primarily driven by personal preference rather than established health guidelines.
  • There is a critical need to establish programs and facilities to encourage adherence to WHO-recommended physical activity intensities, particularly for older adults.
