This study introduces an Efficient and QoS supported Multichannel Medium Access Control (EQM-MAC) protocol for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). EQM-MAC enhances non-safety applications by dynamically adjusting parameters for better Quality-of-Service (QoS) and throughput on highways.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Network Engineering
- Telecommunications
Background:
- Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) utilize multichannel communication based on IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 1609.4.
- Diverse applications in VANETs, including safety and non-safety services, necessitate varying Quality-of-Service (QoS) levels.
- Non-safety applications like transport efficiency and infotainment are gaining prominence and market significance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose an Efficient and QoS supported Multichannel Medium Access Control (EQM-MAC) protocol tailored for VANETs in highway environments.
- To enhance the performance of non-safety applications by ensuring adequate QoS support.
- To optimize resource utilization within the multichannel framework of VANETs.
Main Methods:
- The proposed EQM-MAC protocol leverages service channel resources for non-safety message transmissions throughout the synchronization interval.
- It dynamically adjusts the minimum contention window size for different non-safety services based on prevailing traffic conditions.
- Performance was evaluated through theoretical model analysis and extensive simulation.
Main Results:
- The EQM-MAC protocol demonstrates the capability to effectively support Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements for non-safety applications.
- High saturation throughput was achieved for non-safety services.
- Low transmission delay was observed for non-safety applications, indicating improved efficiency.
Conclusions:
- The EQM-MAC protocol offers a viable solution for improving non-safety application performance in VANETs.
- It balances QoS support with high throughput and low delay, crucial for emerging VANET services.
- The protocol's dynamic adjustment mechanism contributes to its effectiveness in varying traffic conditions.
