Summary

Propofol infusion provided smooth anesthesia induction and rapid recovery in elderly patients undergoing major surgery. Hypotension after the induction dose was the main issue, but propofol was generally satisfactory.

Background:

  • Total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) is an alternative to volatile agents.
  • Propofol is a widely used intravenous anesthetic agent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of propofol infusion for TIVA in elderly patients undergoing major upper gastrointestinal surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty consecutive patients received propofol infusion, fentanyl, vecuronium, and oxygen in air.
  • Patients were predominantly elderly and underwent major upper gastrointestinal surgery.

Main Results:

  • Propofol provided rapid, smooth induction with variable dose requirements (0.5-2.9 mg/kg).
  • A mean systolic blood pressure fall of 27% was observed, most pronounced in elderly patients.
