Purpose of the Study:

  • Thirty-eight adult patients undergoing opiate-thiopental-nitrous oxide anesthesia were studied.
  • Three groups received single doses, cumulative doses, or cumulative doses with a continuous infusion.

    • The cumulative dose technique without infusion significantly underestimated potency (ED90 of 0.42 ± 0.06 mg/kg, P < 0.05).
    • Clinically administered succinylcholine doses (1.0-1.5 mg/kg) appear to be 3-5 times the ED90.

    Conclusions:

    • The cumulative dose technique accurately determines succinylcholine potency when an infusion compensates for drug elimination.
    • This method provides reliable dose-response data for neuromuscular blocking agents.
    • The findings support the efficacy of standard succinylcholine doses for achieving excellent intubating conditions.
