This study trained children with special needs to use the TICO interface for alternative communication and home control. The adaptable AAL platform successfully enhanced their autonomy and confidence.
Area of Science:
- Assistive technology
- Special education
- Human-computer interaction
Background:
- Long-term collaboration between university and special education teachers.
- Integration of the TICO interface into a heterogeneous Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) platform.
- Focus on functional AAL technology trends.
Purpose of the Study:
- To train children with special needs in alternative communication and home control using the TICO interface.
- To adapt and evaluate training strategies for enhancing pupil autonomy.
- To assess the effectiveness of an AAL platform in improving personal autonomy and self-confidence.
Main Methods:
- Case study methodology with structured and semi-structured observations.
- Training five children unable to use commercial home control systems.
- Installation of the TICO-home-control system in a special education school library.
Main Results:
- Children achieved good results in using an open home control system.
- The AAL platform proved efficient in training foundational cognitive skills like virtual representation and cause-effect interaction.
- The flexible TICO interface allowed dynamic adjustment of complexity to meet evolving needs.
Conclusions:
- The TICO-home-control system, integrated into an AAL platform, effectively enhances autonomy and self-confidence in children with special needs.
- The adaptable interface and training strategies are crucial for improving interaction and independence.
- The platform facilitates learning of essential cognitive skills for assistive technology use.
