Background:

  • Enterococcus faecalis endophthalmitis (EFE) is a severe intraocular infection.
  • Pediatric cases of EFE are infrequently reported, necessitating further investigation into their unique characteristics and outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document the incidence and clinical features of Enterococcus faecalis endophthalmitis (EFE) in pediatric patients.
  • To compare the outcomes of EFE in children versus adults.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis was conducted on 19 pediatric patients (≤18 years) who underwent vitrectomy for EFE.
  • Data from these pediatric cases were compared with those of 18 adult patients with EFE treated between January 1995 and December 2015.

Main Results:

  • Post-traumatic EFE predominated in children (89.4%), frequently associated with broomstick (52.9%) and needle (35.2%) injuries.
  • Pediatric patients achieved significantly better "optimum functional outcome" (63.1%) compared to adults (27.7%).
  • Factors associated with poor outcomes included delayed intervention (>3 days) and retinal detachment, irrespective of the Ocular Trauma Score.

  • Prompt diagnosis and management of pediatric EFE are crucial for achieving favorable visual recovery.
