This case study details managing pyoderma vegetans, a rare facial skin condition. Immunosuppressive therapy with ciclosporin and CO2 laser treatment led to excellent cosmetic results.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunodermatology

Background:

  • Pyoderma vegetans is a rare, chronic skin disease characterized by pustules and vegetating plaques.
  • Management can be challenging due to its rarity and potential for disfigurement.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old woman presented with a rapidly enlarging facial lesion, initially misdiagnosed as an infected cyst.
  • The patient had a history of Crohn's disease and ileal adenocarcinoma.

Findings:

  • A clinical diagnosis of pyoderma vegetans was established.
  • The patient showed significant improvement with oral ciclosporin, an immunosuppressive therapy.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing addressed residual scarring, improving the cosmetic outcome.
