Summary

Hyperprolactinemia, or oversecretion of prolactin, can manifest as infertility in men. Erectile dysfunction and poor semen quality may be early indicators of this condition, even without detectable pituitary microadenomas.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Urology

Background:

  • Hyperprolactinemia is a condition characterized by elevated prolactin levels.
  • Prolactin's role in male reproductive health is increasingly recognized.
  • Infertility investigations often include hormonal assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe clinical presentations of hyperprolactinemia in infertile men.
  • To investigate the association between hyperprolactinemia and specific male infertility factors.
  • To determine if radiological findings correlate with clinical symptoms of hyperprolactinemia in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 49 infertile male patients.
  • Clinical data collection including symptoms and reproductive parameters.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Radiological assessment for pituitary microadenomas.
  • Main Results:

    • Clinical descriptions of prolactin oversecretion were documented in 49 patients.
    • No pituitary microadenomas were identified radiologically in these patients.
    • Erectile dysfunction and deficient semen parameters were observed in some patients with hyperprolactinemia.

    Conclusions:

    • Hyperprolactinemia can present as a cause of male infertility.
    • Erectile dysfunction and abnormal semen parameters may be early signs of hyperprolactinemia.
    • Absence of microadenomas does not rule out hyperprolactinemia as a cause of infertility.
