Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

893
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

Heart rate variability (HRV) experiments effectively identify psychopathic inmates, outperforming the Implicit Association Test (IAT). This study highlights HRV

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychology
  • Psychophysiology
  • Clinical Neuroscience

Background:

  • Current psychopathy assessments rely on interviews and file reviews.
  • There is a need for tools with improved predictive validity beyond symptom ratings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of psychophysiological measures in detecting psychopathy.
  • To compare the diagnostic utility of heart rate variability (HRV) and the Implicit Association Test (IAT) against traditional methods.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 204 Spanish inmates underwent psychopathy assessment via interviews and file reviews.
  • Implicit Association Test (IAT) and heart rate variability (HRV) experiments were conducted.
  • The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) served as a control measure.

Main Results:

  • Spectral HRV indices significantly differentiated psychopathic inmates.
  • IAT and IGT failed to discriminate between psychopathic and non-psychopathic individuals.
  • HRV indices demonstrated greater sensitivity in assessing the affective-interpersonal facets of psychopathy.

Conclusions:

  • Heart rate variability (HRV) experiments offer superior detection of psychopathy compared to IAT.
  • Psychophysiological measures like HRV show promise for objective psychopathy assessment in forensic populations.
