Summary

This study shows that a six-week program teaching positive psychological skills significantly improved osteoarthritis symptom severity and well-being in older adults. This intervention offers a promising approach for managing chronic pain and improving quality of life.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and test a psychosocial intervention focused on building positive psychological skills.
  • To assess the intervention's impact on osteoarthritis symptom severity (pain, function) and psychosocial well-being.
  • To evaluate the intervention's effectiveness in patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis.

Main Methods:

  • A two-arm randomized design with a six-month follow-up was employed.
  • Participants (N=42, aged 50+) with knee/hip osteoarthritis and pain ratings ≥4 were randomized.
  • A six-week program focused on positive skill-building activities or neutral control activities was administered.

Main Results:

  • High adherence (64% completed >80% activities) was observed.
  • The positive skills group showed significantly greater improvement in osteoarthritis symptom severity (P=0.02, d=0.86).

  • This approach may serve as a valuable tool for chronic pain management in osteoarthritis.
