Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Public Health
  • Sports Medicine

Background:

  • Physical activity (PA) during pregnancy offers significant health benefits for expectant mothers.
  • Accurate PA measurement is essential for research linking PA to maternal health outcomes.
  • Assessing PA in pregnant populations presents unique challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and summarize valid and reliable physical activity questionnaires specifically for pregnant women.
  • To identify the most accurate tools for measuring PA in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted in 2013 across PubMed, OvidSP, and Web of Science.
  • Included studies evaluated the measurement properties of PA questionnaires in pregnant populations.

  • Four questionnaires (Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire, Modified Kaiser Physical Activity Survey, Short Pregnancy Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire, Third Pregnancy Infection and Nutrition Study Physical Activity Questionnaire) met the criteria.
  • Main Results:

    • Validity and reliability were assessed using correlations with objective/subjective PA measures and test-retest reliability.
    • Sample sizes ranged from 45 to 177 subjects.
    • The Modified Kaiser Physical Activity Survey and Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (various versions) showed the best validity and reliability characteristics.

    Conclusions:

    • Measuring physical activity in pregnant women is complex.
    • While questionnaires offer a practical method, they have limitations.
    • The Modified Kaiser Physical Activity Survey and Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire are recommended for assessing PA in pregnant women.
