Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Cell Biology
  • Pathogen-Host Interactions

Background:

  • Salmonella are successful intracellular pathogens causing various diseases.
  • They adopt distinct lifestyles within host cells, residing in vacuoles or the cytosol.
  • These lifestyles can coexist within the same infected cell.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize current knowledge on Salmonella intracellular subpopulations.
  • To discuss the mechanisms governing Salmonella's cytosolic vs. vacuolar pathways.
  • To explore host-pathogen factors influencing these lifestyles and host defenses.

Main Methods:

  • Review of in vitro studies on Salmonella-host cell interactions.
  • Analysis of host and pathogen factors affecting intracellular localization.
  • Investigation of host immune responses to different Salmonella populations.

Main Results:

  • Salmonella exhibits contrasting intracellular lifestyles: hyper-replication in the cytosol and moderate proliferation/persistence in vacuoles.
  • The predominant lifestyle depends on the host cell type.
  • Mechanisms controlling vacuolar escape and host defense evasion are critical.

Conclusions:

  • The emergence of distinct Salmonella intracellular subpopulations is a complex process.
  • Understanding these divergent lifestyles is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies against Salmonella infections.
