Background:

  • Enchondromas are benign cartilaginous bone tumors often found in the hand.
  • Large enchondromas within phalanges pose surgical challenges for complete curettage.
  • Pathological fractures can occur due to enchondroma expansion.

Observation:

  • A soft-wire (cerclage wire) was adapted as a curette for enchondroma removal.
  • The technique was applied to enchondromas in a middle phalanx and a distal phalanx.
  • Surgical air drills created small cortical fenestrations for wire insertion.

Findings:

  • Soft-wire curettage proved effective for removing enchondromas in phalangeal bone lesions.
  • The procedure resulted in successful bone incorporation after implantation of beta-tricalcium phosphate particles.
