Summary

Rats can distinguish between social partners present during drug use and those present during sobriety. This finding aids in developing models for studying social cue-induced relapse in substance use disorders.

Background:

Drug cues trigger relapse in individuals with substance use disorders.
Social interaction can be a drug-associated cue or a preventative stimulus.
It is unknown if rats associate specific conspecifics with drug experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if rats behaviorally discriminate between drug-associated and non-drug-associated conspecifics.
To establish a model for studying social cue-induced reinstatement of drug seeking.

Main Methods:

Rats interacted with two distinct conspecifics in a custom social interaction chamber.
One conspecific was present during drug administration, the other during a sober state.
Behavioral responses towards each conspecific were recorded and analyzed.
