  • Head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors often experience significant physical and psychological challenges.
  • Exercise interventions are crucial for improving quality of life (QoL) in cancer survivors.
  • Understanding patient preferences and barriers is essential for designing effective exercise programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine exercise preferences, perceived benefits, and barriers among HNC survivors.
  • To assess the level of interest in participating in structured exercise programs.
  • To inform the development of tailored exercise interventions for this population.

Main Methods:

  • A postal questionnaire survey was distributed to 1021 eligible HNC survivors treated between 2010 and 2014.
  • The survey assessed exercise preferences, barriers, perceived benefits, physical activity levels, and QoL.
  • Response rate was 43% (n=437), with a median age of 66 years and 74% males.

Main Results:

  • 30% expressed definite interest and 34% "maybe" in joining an exercise program.
  • Preferred exercise: 3x/week, moderate-intensity, 15-29 min bouts. Popular activities: walking (68%), flexibility (35%), swimming (33%). Preferred locations: home (55%), outdoors (46%).
  • Top barriers: dry mouth/throat (40%), fatigue (37%), shortness of breath (30%). Physical benefits were recognized, but social/work benefits less so.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of HNC survivors are interested in exercise programs.
  • Exercise program design should address common barriers like xerostomia and fatigue.
  • Tailored programs focusing on walking and flexibility, offered at home or outdoors, are likely to be well-received.
