Summary

Celiprolol effectively lowers blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. This beta-blocker also improves serum lipid profiles, reducing triglycerides and increasing HDL cholesterol.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of celiprolol on blood pressure and serum lipids in patients with essential hypertension.
  • To assess both short-term (4 weeks) and long-term (12 months) treatment outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • 22 patients with essential hypertension (WHO stages I-II) received celiprolol for 4 weeks.
  • 12 patients with essential hypertension (WHO stages I-II) received celiprolol for 12 months.
  • Blood pressure, serum lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides), and lipid electrophoresis (HDL, LDL) were monitored.

Main Results:

  • Celiprolol significantly reduced standing blood pressure after 4 weeks and 12 months.
  • Serum triglyceride levels decreased significantly after 4 weeks and showed a smaller decrease after 12 months.
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) increased, while low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and the LDL/HDL ratio decreased, normalizing elevated lipid values. Serum fibrinogen also reduced during long-term treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Celiprolol does not adversely affect serum lipid levels in patients with essential hypertension.
  • Celiprolol may offer beneficial effects on lipid profiles and reduce fibrinogen levels.
