Summary

Electroacupuncture treatment (EAT) effectively resolved auricular paresthesia in a patient with great auricular nerve (GAN) disturbance. Symptoms, including tingling and tactile hyperesthesia, significantly improved and remained resolved at a 15-month follow-up.

Background:

The great auricular nerve (GAN) supplies sensation to the auricle.
Disorders of the GAN are uncommon, with great auricular neuralgia being rare.
Auricular paresthesia, a tingling sensation around the ear, can be a symptom of GAN disturbance.

Purpose of the Study:

To report a case of auricular paresthesia due to great auricular nerve disturbance.
To evaluate the efficacy of electroacupuncture treatment (EAT) for this condition.

Main Methods:

A case study of a male patient in his 60s with a 6-month history of auricular paresthesia.
Diagnostic imaging revealed cervical spine degeneration.
Electroacupuncture treatment (EAT) was administered weekly for 6 weeks near the affected nerve.

Main Results:

The patient reported a significant decrease in symptom severity, measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).
Tactile hyperesthesia in the GAN distribution normalized.
Auricular paresthesia resolved completely and showed no recurrence at 15-month follow-up.

Conclusions:

Electroacupuncture treatment (EAT) demonstrated effectiveness in managing auricular paresthesia associated with great auricular nerve disturbance.
EAT may reduce neural sensitivity through a somatosensory reflex mechanism.
This case highlights EAT as a potential treatment option for rare nerve disorders.
