Summary

Intermittent hypoxic-hyperoxic training (IHHT) significantly improved cognitive function and exercise capacity in older adults undergoing multimodal training intervention (MTI). IHHT is safe and well-tolerated in geriatric patients.

Background:

  • Multimodal training intervention (MTI) may enhance cognitive function and exercise tolerance in geriatric patients.
  • Intermittent hypoxic-hyperoxic training (IHHT) is a potential complementary therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of IHHT as an adjunct to MTI in improving cognitive function and exercise tolerance in geriatric patients.
  • To assess the safety and tolerability of IHHT in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 34 geriatric patients (64-92 years).
  • Intervention groups received either MTI + IHHT or MTI + ambient air for 5-7 weeks.
  • Cognitive function (DemTect, CDT) and functional exercise capacity (6MWT) were assessed pre- and post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • The MTI + IHHT group showed significantly greater improvements in DemTect (+16.7%) and CDT (+10.7%) compared to the MTI + ambient air group.
  • The MTI + IHHT group also demonstrated significantly greater improvements in the 6MWT (+24.1%) compared to the control group.
  • IHHT was found to be easily applicable and well-tolerated by geriatric patients.

Conclusions:

  • IHHT is a safe and effective addition to MTI for enhancing cognitive function and functional exercise capacity in geriatric patients.
  • The findings support the integration of IHHT into rehabilitation programs for older adults.
