Background:

  • Early school start times are associated with sleep deprivation in adolescents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of a district-wide earlier school start time on sleep patterns in elementary school students.
  • To assess changes in sleep duration, wake times, and sleepiness after a shift in school start times.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 689 third- to fifth-grade students completed sleep surveys in 2009 (pre-change) and 625 in 2010 (post-change).
  • The school start time shifted from 8:20 am to 7:45 am in Fall 2009.
  • Descriptive statistics were used to analyze sleep survey responses by grade level.

Main Results:

  • Third graders reported an average increase of 24 minutes in total sleep time.
  • Fourth and fifth graders experienced a decrease of 4 and 9 minutes in average sleep time, respectively.
  • Weekend later wake and bedtimes decreased, and sleepiness increased slightly in fifth graders post-change.

Conclusions:

  • The implemented change in elementary school start times did not result in a decrease in total sleep duration.
  • This study provides novel insights into the effects of early school start times on younger students' sleep.
