Summary

Glycemic excursions are common in patients undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH) and continuous insulin treatment. Hypoglycemia risk increases during rewarming, and more frequent glucose variations occur in nonsurvivors.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of glucose excursions during TH phases.
  • To analyze glycemic control patterns in relation to patient survival.
  • To identify risks of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia during temperature transitions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of patients treated with TH and continuous insulin.
  • Data collection included glucose levels, insulin doses, and temperatures.
  • Analysis covered 24 hours post-rewarming.

  • 24 of 26 patients experienced glycemic excursions.
