Retinoic acid receptor-β (RAR-β) is expressed in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) tissues. Its expression impacts patient prognosis differently across LSCC stages, serving as an independent prognostic factor.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Cancer Research
Background:
- Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a major subtype of non-small cell lung cancer.
- Retinoic acid receptor-beta (RAR-β) is a nuclear receptor involved in cell differentiation and proliferation.
- Understanding molecular markers that influence LSCC prognosis is crucial for treatment strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the expression of RAR-β in LSCC tissues.
- To evaluate the correlation between RAR-β expression and clinicopathological features.
- To determine the prognostic significance of RAR-β expression in LSCC patients.
Main Methods:
- SP assay was employed to detect RAR-β expression in 100 LSCC tissues and 20 normal lung tissues.
- Clinicopathological data and survival information were collected for 100 LSCC patients.
- Prognostic follow-up was conducted to assess survival outcomes.
Main Results:
- RAR-β was expressed in 54% of LSCC tissues.
- RAR-β expression did not correlate with age, gender, tumor stage, or pathological type.
- Positive RAR-β expression was associated with better survival in Stage I LSCC (31 vs. 22 months), but worse survival in Stage II and III A LSCC (23 vs. 16 months and 19 vs. 7 months, respectively).
Conclusions:
- RAR-β is expressed in LSCC tumor tissues.
- RAR-β expression shows a dual effect on postoperative survival in LSCC patients, depending on the stage.
- RAR-β expression status is an independent prognostic factor for LSCC patients.
