Summary

Static progressive orthoses show promise in improving range of motion for elbow contracture, a common complication after trauma. Further high-quality research is needed to confirm these findings for elbow contracture treatment.

  • Elbow contracture is a common musculoskeletal complication after trauma, significantly impacting daily activities.
  • Conventional treatments for elbow contracture often yield inadequate outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of static progressive orthoses in treating elbow contracture.
  • To synthesize current evidence on static progressive orthoses for elbow contracture.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted in major databases (Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed, EBSCOhost) for English articles published between January 1997 and January 2017.
  • Included articles were quality-assessed by two independent assessors.
  • A narrative synthesis of findings from ten included clinical trials was performed.

Main Results:

  • All ten included studies reported significant immediate improvements in the range of motion for elbow contracture.
  • These improvements in range of motion were sustained at follow-up.
  • One randomized controlled trial found no significant difference between static progressive and dynamic orthoses for elbow contracture.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence, though of low quality, suggests static progressive orthoses can improve range of motion in elbow contracture.
  • High-quality randomized controlled trials are recommended to further validate the effectiveness of static progressive orthoses for elbow contracture.
