Summary

This study found that stronger muscles, especially knee extensors, are linked to better functional mobility in frail elderly individuals living in institutions. Improved muscle strength may lead to better performance in mobility tests.

Background:

  • Dynapenia, or age-related muscle weakness, is a significant concern in institutionalized frail elderly.
  • Functional mobility is crucial for maintaining independence and quality of life in older adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between dynapenia and functional mobility in institutionalized frail elderly individuals.
  • To identify specific muscle groups that may be most influential in this relationship.

Main Methods:

  • A correlational study was conducted with 26 institutionalized elderly participants (mean age 82.3 years).
  • Assessments included cognitive function (Mini Mental State Examination), depression (Geriatric Depression Scale), physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire), functional mobility (Timed Up and Go test), and muscle strength (handgrip and portable dynamometers for various muscle groups).

Main Results:

  • A significant negative correlation was found between functional mobility (Timed Up and Go test) and dynapenia across all tested muscle groups.
  • The strongest negative correlation was observed with knee extensor strength (r = -0.65).

Conclusions:
