    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Display Technologies
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Augmented reality (AR) displays require efficient optical components for image projection.
    • Liquid-crystal (LC) based volume gratings offer potential for high-performance optical elements.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To demonstrate a reflective liquid-crystal polarization volume grating with high efficiency.
    • To evaluate its performance for augmented reality applications.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of a reflective liquid-crystal polarization volume grating.
    • Measurement of coupling efficiency at 650 nm and a 50° deflection angle.
    • Analysis of angular dependence of the reflection band and transmittance.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved a coupling efficiency of 90% at 650 nm and 50° deflection.
    • Observed angular dependence consistent with Bragg conditions.
    • Demonstrated high transmittance of ambient light with minimal scattering.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed grating is highly efficient and suitable for AR displays.
    • Tunable bandwidth via layer periodicity allows for versatile photonic device design.
    • Offers design freedom for AR and other advanced optical systems.
