Incomplete Dominance01:43

Incomplete Dominance

30.4K
Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism.

X-linked Traits01:19

X-linked Traits

59.1K
In most mammalian species, females have two X sex chromosomes and males have an X and Y. As a result, mutations on the X chromosome in females may be masked by the presence of a normal allele on the second X. In contrast, a mutation on the X chromosome in males more often causes observable biological defects, as there is no normal X to compensate. Trait variations arising from mutations on the X chromosome are called “X-linked”.

Phylogenetic Trees03:21

Phylogenetic Trees

50.2K
Phylogenetic trees come in many forms. It matters in which sequence the organisms are arranged from the bottom to the top of the tree, but the branches can rotate at their nodes without altering the information. The lines connecting individual nodes can be straight, angled, or even curved.

Trihybrid Crosses02:27

Trihybrid Crosses

Trihybrid Crosses
Some of Mendel’s crosses examined three pairs of contrasting characteristics. Such a cross is called a trihybrid cross. A trihybrid cross is a combination of three individual monohybrid crosses. For example, plant height (tall vs. short), seed shape (round vs. wrinkled), and seed color (yellow vs. green).
The F1 generation plants of a trihybrid cross are heterozygous for all three traits and produce eight gametes. Upon self-fertilization, these gametes have an equal...

Area of Science:

  • Genetics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Software Development

Background:

  • Clinical genetics centers rely on collecting, managing, and visualizing family history data.
  • Existing pedigree tools are often difficult to manage, time-consuming to capture, and challenging to manipulate or visualize graphically.
  • There is a need for freely available, lightweight graphical pedigree editors that can be easily integrated into web applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an interactive graphical pedigree editor that addresses the limitations of existing tools.
  • To create a configurable, extensible, and lightweight solution for clinical pedigree data management.
  • To facilitate the incorporation of pedigree editing capabilities into web-based applications.

Main Methods:

  • Developed 'pedigreejs', an interactive graphical pedigree editor using JavaScript.
  • Utilized standard pedigree nomenclature for data representation.
  • Employed an open-source JavaScript library for hierarchical layout and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) output.

Main Results:

  • Pedigreejs offers an easily configurable, extensible, and lightweight pedigree editor.
  • The tool generates SVG images viewable and editable in web browsers.
  • It provides an interactive graphical interface for pedigree data visualization and manipulation.

Conclusions:

  • Pedigreejs is a freely available, open-source tool that simplifies the management and visualization of clinical pedigree data.
  • Its lightweight and configurable nature makes it suitable for integration into various web applications.
  • The software enhances the usability of family history data in clinical genetics settings.
