Background:

  • Burnout, characterized by emotional depletion and poor work adaptation, stems from prolonged occupational stress.
  • It comprises emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and diminished personal accomplishment (PA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the degree of burnout in doctors and nurses within emergency medicine departments (EMDs).
  • To identify predictors of burnout among EMD professionals in South India.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 105 EMD professionals.
  • Standardized questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory, were used.
  • Univariate and multivariate analyses with binary logistic regression identified burnout predictors.

Main Results:

  • High prevalence of moderate to severe burnout was observed: EE (64.8%), DP (71.4%), and PA (73.3%).
  • Risk factors for DP included facing criticism, disturbed sleep, and being short-tempered.
  • Predictors for PA included exposure to mortality and fear of medication errors.

  • Burnout is moderately high among doctors and nurses in EMDs across its three components.
  • Identified predictors include criticism, disturbed sleep, short temper, fear of errors, and witnessing death.
