Summary

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) using luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analogues for prostate cancer (PCa) showed no adverse effects on cognitive performance (CP) in most patients after six months. A small percentage experienced minor changes, with improvements and worsening evenly distributed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of ADT on cognitive performance (CP) in PCa patients.
  • To assess changes in working memory, visual memory, visuospatial ability, and nonverbal reasoning after 6 months of LHRH analogue treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, observational, multicentre, open-label study.
  • 308 PCa patients receiving LHRH analogues for ≥6 months.
  • Cognitive domains assessed at baseline and 6 months using standardized tests (WAIS III, JLO, etc.).

Main Results:

  • Most patients (79.6%) showed no significant cognitive changes after 6 months of ADT.
  • 20.4% experienced significant changes in at least one cognitive domain.
  • Changes were minor and evenly split between improvements and deterioration across various cognitive tests.

Conclusions:

  • Six months of LHRH analogue administration for PCa does not appear to negatively impact cognitive performance.
  • The study suggests ADT is generally safe concerning cognitive function in the short term.
