Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia in Spitz nevi. A possible source of confusion with squamous cell carcinoma

The presence of epithelial hyperplasia in Spitz nevi has been recognized almost from the time of Spitz's first description of the distinctive lesion that bears her name. However, the fact that this hyperplasia can acquire pseudoepitheliomatous features and thus lead to a mistaken diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma is not widely appreciated. This report describes six examples of this phenomenon.
