Summary

Adults with atopic dermatitis (AD) have a slightly increased risk of death from any cause. The study found elevated risks for cardiovascular, infectious, and urogenital diseases, though absolute risks remain low.

Background:

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • Previous studies have linked AD to various comorbidities.
  • Cause-specific mortality risk in adults with AD remains largely unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cause-specific death rates and mortality risk in adult patients diagnosed with atopic dermatitis.
  • To determine if individuals with AD face a higher risk of death from specific diseases compared to the general population.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-linkage of nationwide health care and cause of death registers.
  • Matching adult AD patients with 10 controls per subject.
  • Calculation of incidence rates and hazard ratios (HRs) for cause-specific death using Cox proportional hazards models.

Main Results:

  • A total of 8686 AD patients and 86,860 controls were analyzed.
  • Overall mortality risk was significantly increased in AD patients (HR 1.27).
  • Elevated risks observed for death due to cardiovascular (HR 1.45), infectious (HR 3.71), and urogenital diseases (HR 5.51).

Conclusions:

  • Adults with atopic dermatitis exhibit a slightly elevated risk of death.
  • While risks for cardiovascular, urogenital, and infectious diseases are higher, the absolute mortality risk is very low.
  • Findings highlight the importance of monitoring comorbidities in adult AD patients.
