2017 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With
Insights
The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation now conducts annual reviews of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) science, replacing the old 5-year cycle. This year
Area of Science:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
Background:
- The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) has transitioned to a continuous review process for CPR science.
- This shift replaces the previous 5-year cycle of guideline development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce the first annual summary of CPR and ECC science reviewed by ILCOR.
- To present treatment recommendations based on the latest scientific evidence.
Main Methods:
- Annual review of scientific literature relevant to CPR and ECC.
- Application of Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria to assess evidence quality.
- Inclusion of task force deliberations, including values and preferences.
Main Results:
- This year's review covers 5 basic life support and 1 pediatric consensus on CPR and ECC science.
- Summaries include scientific findings, evidence quality, and treatment recommendations.
- Key knowledge gaps for future research are identified.
Conclusions:
- The new annual review process ensures timely updates to CPR and ECC guidelines.
- This systematic approach enhances the quality and accessibility of resuscitation science information.
- Identification of knowledge gaps will guide future research priorities in CPR and ECC.
Abstract:
The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation has initiated a near-continuous review of cardiopulmonary resuscitation science that replaces the previous 5-year cyclic batch-and-queue approach process. This is the first of an annual series of International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations summary articles that will include the cardiopulmonary resuscitation science reviewed by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation in the previous year. The review this year includes 5 basic life support and 1 pediatric Consensuses on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science With Treatment Recommendations. Each of these includes a summary of the science and its quality based on Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria and treatment recommendations. Insights into the deliberations of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation task force members are provided in Values and Preferences sections. Finally, the task force members have prioritized and listed the top 3 knowledge gaps for each population, intervention, comparator, and outcome question.
