The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

7.9K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Surgery
  • Equine Medicine
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Thyroid gland enlargement in horses can be caused by various neoplasms.
  • Surgical intervention is often necessary for treatment.
  • Traditional surgical approaches may require general anesthesia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a surgical technique for thyroidectomy in horses with thyroid neoplasia.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of standing thyroidectomy under local anesthesia and sedation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 10 client-owned horses undergoing standing thyroidectomy.
  • Surgical technique involved hemi- or bilateral thyroidectomy under standing sedation and local anesthesia.
  • Evaluation of outcomes including complications, exercise resumption, recurrence, and cosmetic results.

Main Results:

  • Thyroid enlargement was unilateral in 8 horses and bilateral in 2.
  • Histopathology revealed adenomas, adenocarcinomas, cystic hyperplasia, and C-cell adenoma.
  • No major intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed; all horses returned to exercise within 6 weeks. One case of recurrence required a second surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Standing thyroidectomy is a safe and effective surgical option for horses with thyroid enlargement.
  • The procedure does not increase the risk of complications and allows for rapid recovery.
  • This technique can be considered for horses with surgically amenable thyroid conditions.
