Summary

Auricular therapy, a complementary medicine approach, shows promise in supporting breastfeeding by promoting earlier lactation and reducing the risk of low milk production. Further research is needed to establish it as an evidence-based practice.

Background:

Breastfeeding support is a key healthcare interest.
Auricular therapy is explored in traditional medicine for lactation.
Several clinical studies have investigated its effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the current evidence for auricular therapy (AT) in improving lactation.
To examine intervention protocols and outcome measures in AT studies.
To inform clinical application and future research directions.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of existing literature.
Narrative synthesis methodology employed.
Inclusion of 23 randomized and 3 non-randomized controlled trials.

Main Results:

Auricular acupressure with vaccaria seeds was common.
Reduced risk of delayed lactation and low milk production observed.
Serum prolactin levels favored auricular therapy; overall better lactation outcomes reported.

Conclusions:

Evidence suggests benefits of auricular therapy for postpartum lactation.
More stringent research designs and standardized protocols are needed.
