Summary

Bone hydatidosis, a rare condition, can be effectively treated in the pelvis. Surgical hip resection combined with antiparasitic medication offers a promising solution for this challenging bone disease.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Bone hydatidosis is a rare parasitic infection, accounting for 0.9–2.5% of all hydatidosis cases.
  • The pelvic bone is the second most common site for bone hydatidosis.
  • Effective curative treatment for pelvic bone hydatidosis remains a challenge.

Observation:

  • A case of hydatidosis affecting the ischium and extending to the hip is presented.
  • The patient underwent surgical hip resection using patient-specific cutting guides.
  • Total hip reconstruction was performed following resection.

Findings:

  • The patient received albendazole for two months pre-surgery and three months post-surgery.
  • This treatment approach resulted in satisfying outcomes for the young patient.
  • Prosthetic reconstruction, mirroring oncological procedures, restored good hip function.

Implications:

  • Wide surgical resection combined with antiparasitic therapy is a viable treatment for pelvic bone hydatidosis.
  • This strategy can achieve favorable functional results in young patients.
  • The study highlights the potential of oncological surgical techniques in managing complex bone hydatidosis.
