Preoperative ManagementThe primary goals of preoperative management in kidney transplantation are to optimize the patient’s metabolic state and prepare them for surgery through diet adjustments, necessary dialysis, and tailored medical treatment. This phase also involves comprehensive infection screening and patient education about the surgical procedure and postoperative care to improve outcomes and adherence.Medical ManagementA comprehensive evaluation is required for both the living...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Adrenal gland tumors require surgical intervention.
  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LAE) is a minimally invasive surgical approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LAE) for adrenal gland tumors.
  • To analyze surgical outcomes, including complications and recovery metrics.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 26 LAE procedures performed between 2011 and 2016.
  • Patients underwent a transperitoneal 4-port approach for right, left, or bilateral adrenalectomies.
  • Indications included primary and metastatic adrenal tumors.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-six successful LAE procedures were completed in 24 patients with no conversions to open surgery.
  • Mean operative time was 135 minutes, mean blood loss was 160 ml, and mean hospital stay was 4 days.
  • One patient experienced spleen injury requiring transfusion; another developed pancreatitis, both managed conservatively. Histology revealed 73.1% adenocarcinoma and 26.9% adenoma.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LAE) is a safe and effective surgical option for managing adrenal tumors.
  • The procedure is associated with low complication rates and favorable patient outcomes.
  • LAE offers a minimally invasive approach with comparable efficacy to open surgery for adrenal gland pathologies.
