Infertility in Females

Female infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse and affects about 10–15% of couples worldwide. The primary cause of female infertility is ovulatory disorders, which hinder the release of eggs. Background:

U.S. servicewomen experience higher unintended pregnancy rates than civilian women.
Military policy restricts abortion coverage, except in specific cases.
Limited research exists on servicewomen's abortion care experiences.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore servicewomen's experiences accessing abortion care during active duty.
To understand servicewomen's knowledge and opinions of military abortion policy.
To identify the health, emotional, financial, and logistical consequences of current policy.

Main Methods:

Conducted 21 in-depth interviews with servicewomen who had abortions within two years of active duty.
Interview period: January 2015 to July 2016.
Thematic analysis using inductive and deductive coding.

Main Results:

Concerns about confidentiality, stigma, and career impact deterred half from military care.
Some servicewomen felt abandoned due to lack of options counseling and referral at military facilities.
The military's abortion policy resulted in negative health, emotional, financial, and logistical consequences.
Most servicewomen lacked accurate policy knowledge; upon learning, many favored military provision and coverage.
Apprehension about military involvement in abortion care persists due to privacy and career concerns.

Conclusions:

Wider dissemination of military abortion policy is recommended.
Establishment of abortion referral and support guidelines is needed.
Improving confidentiality within military health services is crucial.
